This shortfall, estimated at nearly a third of last year’s output, is compelling traders to intensify their reliance on international imports to bridge the growing supply gap ahead of the crucial festive season. The projected decline for Himachal Pradesh’s 2026 apple harvest is significant, with production anticipated to fall to approximately 493,465 tonnes, equivalent to 24.6 million boxes, from the 699,876 tonnes recorded in 2025. This downturn underscores the increasing vulnerability of India’s agricultural sector to volatile climatic patterns.

Himachal Pradesh plays an indispensable role in India’s apple supply chain, traditionally fulfilling about 37% of the national demand during the early harvest period before Jammu & Kashmir, the country’s largest producer, reaches its peak in September. Nationally, India cultivates between 2.5 and 2.7 million tonnes of apples annually, with Jammu & Kashmir contributing a dominant 60% share. For Himachal Pradesh, apples represent the very backbone of its horticultural economy, accounting for a staggering 80% of its total output. Usha Sharma, a senior scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Shimla, emphasized, "Our pre-estimates suggest that the production will decline, but the exact data will only come once the season ends, reflecting the full impact of these cumulative weather events." Harish Chauhan, a prominent apple grower and convener of the Kisan Sanyukt Manch, echoed these concerns, stating, "A projected 30% drop in production, as estimated by the horticulture department, is expected to keep apple prices firm this year."

Traders report current wholesale apple prices ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 per 20-kg box, marking an increase of approximately ₹500 to ₹800 compared to the same period last year. This surge comes at a particularly challenging time for Indian households, which are already grappling with elevated food prices across various commodities. In June, India’s food inflation registered at 5.32%, contributing to an overall retail inflation rate of 4.38%. This figure represents an 18-month high and exceeds the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 4% midpoint target for the first time since January 2025, intensifying pressure on monetary policymakers. The rise in apple prices, a staple fruit for many, is set to further strain household budgets, potentially impacting discretionary spending and broader economic sentiment.

This proactive measure aims to mitigate the supply deficit, especially in anticipation of heightened demand during India’s upcoming festive season, which typically sees a spike in fruit consumption. While India’s apple imports had previously shown a downward trend, decreasing by 29.5% to $316.84 million in fiscal year 2026 from $449.74 million in fiscal year 2025, current market dynamics are expected to reverse this trend. The previous decline was largely attributed to robust domestic harvests and possibly a more favorable exchange rate environment, which reduced the necessity and attractiveness of foreign produce.

However, the current market conditions necessitate a renewed focus on international sourcing. Countries like Iran, New Zealand, the US, South Africa, and Chile have consistently been among India’s top five sources for apple imports, offering varieties that have garnered strong consumer preference. American Washington apples and various New Zealand varieties, for instance, continue to be highly popular in the Indian market, often commanding premium prices due to their quality, consistency, and extended shelf life. Akshay Fatnani, director at Fruitporium International, a significant apple importer, noted, "Imports are largely independent of domestic production, as the volume of imports is driven by prices. However, we expect imports to increase this year as market conditions remain firm." He highlighted that popular imported varieties, such as Washington apples, are currently trading around ₹300 a kilogram in the wholesale market, underscoring the price differential and the premium consumers are willing to pay for consistent quality.

Looking ahead, the long-term sustainability of India’s apple industry faces significant challenges from ongoing climate variability. The reliance on traditional cultivation methods, particularly in regions like Himachal Pradesh, makes orchards highly susceptible to even minor shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns. This necessitates a concerted effort towards developing and adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices. Agricultural research institutions and state horticulture departments are exploring avenues such as cultivating new apple varieties that require fewer chilling hours or are more resistant to extreme weather events. Furthermore, investment in robust infrastructure, including advanced cold storage facilities and efficient supply chains, is crucial to minimize post-harvest losses and ensure that available produce reaches markets efficiently.

Beyond immediate market interventions, policymakers and industry stakeholders must consider broader strategies to safeguard India’s horticultural future. This includes promoting crop diversification in vulnerable regions to reduce dependence on a single crop, enhancing farmer access to advanced weather forecasting and early warning systems, and strengthening agricultural insurance schemes to provide a safety net against climate-induced crop failures.
