Other significant American players include Rocket Lab, Firefly Aerospace, Relativity Space, and aerospace giants like Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Europe is also a significant player, with the Airbus-backed French company ArianeGroup developing next-generation launchers, and Germany’s Isar Aerospace making rapid progress in private launch capabilities, often supported by European Space Agency (ESA) initiatives. In contrast, major space powers like China and Japan have traditionally maintained largely state-led space sectors, though China is seeing a rise in private companies often operating with close government ties. While Skyroot has successfully raised approximately $160 million to date, enabling its suborbital test flight and orbital mission, this pales in comparison to international peers. Germany’s Isar Aerospace, for instance, founded around the same time, has secured over $580 million in its recent funding rounds alone, despite not yet achieving an orbital launch. This disparity highlights a crucial funding gap within India’s deep-tech and hardware venture capital landscape, which traditionally favors software and consumer tech. Attracting larger, patient capital, including institutional investments and global venture funds, is imperative for the long and expensive R&D cycles inherent in space technology.

Another critical constraint is the limited pool of specialized space engineers and talent. While India produces a vast number of engineering graduates, the specific skill sets required for advanced propulsion systems, avionics, satellite manufacturing, and complex space software are scarce. This creates a talent bottleneck that could impede rapid scaling.
